Holy Week Devotional: Tuesday
Tuesday: Sanctuary
Scripture: John 12: 20-36
It’s hard to imagine what he was thinking.
Days before his death, Jesus thinks out loud with the people gathered around him:
“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’?
We would understand if that’s what Jesus asked. To ask to be saved, to find a place of safety, of sanctuary in the midst of trouble, is certainly a human thing to ask.
We all search for the same – a place of safe harbor. Whether it is before a storm, during, or after, our desire to find a still, quiet place of security and protection is common to us all.
Moments before the storm of the resurrection, Jesus seeks the very same. Here is his human heart on full display.
In the face of death, in the face of the uncertain, Jesus calls out to his Father for just a moment of sanctuary. A chance to rest in His arms before he continues his journey to the cross.
The work of recovery, the work of life itself will not be a short journey. As Jesus does, we have to take time to rest in God’s presence, to find places of rest, protection, safety and stillness.
“The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”
Questions for Reflection: How are you finding moments of sanctuary in the midst of your recovery work? How do you hear the voice of God calling you to rest?
Prayer:
Holy and immortal God,
from earliest times
you have named us
and called us into discipleship.
Teach us to follow the One
whose light scatters the darkness of our world,
that we may walk as children of the light. Amen.
